Description:
The biennial Pittsburgh Employment Conference is the largest gathering in the world of people who use AAC (augmentative and alternative communication). In addition to employment issues, the 2007 event invluded coverage of retirement considerations. People who use AAC were active participants in the conference. A highlight was the Town Meeting in which people who use AAC discussed issues of importance to them.Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. understand important issues in government policy regarding retirement for individuals with communication disabilities;
2. assist in the development of a Special Needs Family Trust for people with communication disabilities;
3. empathize with augmented communicators who are losing one or both parents through aging and disability;
4. integrate service dog potentials in the lives of augmented communicators;
5. disseminate current research on how students using augmentative communication can succeed at college;
6. relate social services in the United Kingdom and Australia to those of the United States for augmented communicators;
7. plan for the future in terms of having the lifelong support needed for independent living by augmented communicators;
8. acquainted with data and stories of employment for augmented communicators with autism as seen by their aging parents;
9. implement contact between and among augmented communicators for the purpose of stimulating communication aid usage; and
10. assess current issues in augmentative communication for wounded war veterans.
