Description:
The Fall 2008 Professional Development conference is the second of two meetings hosted by the National Braille Association in 2008. This meeting will provide the opportunity for transcribers and other producers of braille materials to learn new, and enhance existing, skills. A course for teachers and paraprofessionals will focus on providing quality braille materials to students. A second course for transcribers will focus on the transcription of mathematics textbooks.

Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

1) apply the principles of Braille Formats: Principles of Print to Braille Transcription, 1997, to the daily worksheets, tests, and other braille materials that are prepared for blind and visually impaired students.

2) teach blind and visually impaired students the various formats that they will encounter in a typical braille transcription of a print textbook.

3) understand and apply the rules of the Nemeth Braille Code to the translation of math and science materials for students, and to the teaching of braille reading skills to those students.
