AAC Solutions for People with ALS

This one day course for speech-language pathologists, assistive technology specialists, and other allied healthcare professionals will education the participant about the AAC evaluation process, device selection, access methods, insurance funding, mounting, and the impact of proper wheelchair seating and positioning for AAC use.

Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Define ALS and how the disease process affects the selection and use of assistive technology.

2. Demonstrate the AAC assessment process and required paperwork for insurance submissions.

3. Identify two alternative funding sources (besides public and private insurance) for payment of assistive technology.

4. Match three AAC devices that are appropriate for a person diagnosed with ALS.

5. Recognize three switches appropriate for a person with ALS.

6. Discuss the importance of proper wheelchair seating and positioning in order to utilize assistive technology devices.

7. Describe AAC mounting systems in regards to optimal AAC use.


CEUs
AAC Solutions for People with ALS is approved for a total of up to 0.6 CEUs (5.8 hours).
