This program will be a week long summer institute that will teach about the fundamentals of Balanced literacy instruction. It will highlight how to teach Balanced Literacy to individuals with signficant disabilities who may require the use of AAC to communicate and learn.

Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity participants will be able to:
1) discuss theoretical models and processes of literacy and their relationship to individuals who use AAC.
2) identify the five components addressed by Florida's Reading Initiative (i.e., phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, reading fluency, and reading comprehension strategies) as they relate to students with significant communication impairments.
3) describe a range of assessment and intervention strategies that address the five components addressed by Florida’s Reading Initiative as well as writing and their application to individuals who use AAC.
4) identify a range of technologies, and a variety of materials and classroom modifications, that support literacy learning and use by AAC users.
5) provide parent and professional support and pursue continuing self-education.
