AAC Evidence-Based Practice & Children with
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

June 3-5 & 7, 2010

Singapore

Description: Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) frequently present with complex communication challenges. This workshop will review evidence-based augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) intervention strategies for building communication competence with individuals with ASD. The workshop covers a variety of topics related to making data-driven clinical decisions about the assessment and intervention for individuals with ASD who may benefit from AAC intervention.

The speaker will review the major language development milestones and the communication processes associated with ASD. In addition, procedures to identify a starting point for language intervention using manual communication boards and/or voice output AAC systems will be discussed. Evidence on AAC strategies will be compared and contrasted. Tool and resources for monitoring results will be highlighted.

A comprehensive overview of the Language Acquisition through Motor Planning (LAMP) program will be presented.  Participants will become familiar with a systematic approach for developing more proficient communication. LAMP strategies support: 1) use of a variety of communication modes which may include AAC, speech production or a combination; 2) language expression beyond the one word level; and 3) individuals with ASD being empowered by communication.

Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the three major language transitions and communication processes associated with ASD.
  2. Recognize the role of readiness to learn and shared focus in the implementation of AAC with individuals with ASD.
  3. Discuss the importance of using core vocabulary and stable button locations on devices to develop motor patterns and automaticity for individuals with ASD who use AAC.
  4. Identify evidence-based intervention strategies for building language competence with individuals with ASD who use AAC.
  5. Evaluate strategies and tools to monitor gains in language and communication treatment.
  6. Identify steps for getting started and preparing AAC intervention for a client with ASD who uses AAC
