Self-Operated Accessible Text and E-Reading on iPods

Description:
Many students who have difficulty accessing traditional printed versions of tests, quizzes and other text based material in the classroom have had success accessing material digitally. This session focuses on placing tests, quizzes, worksheets and other material onto iPods/Zunes in text format, slideshow format, audio format and video format. This will be done using almost entirely free software, which will be included in a list of links for participants to take back to their schools and offices. This can easily be done on both Mac and PC Computers.Speaker Biography :
Daniel McNulty has a BA and MS in K-12 Special Education from Purdue University, a current Indiana teaching license and has taught in a K-6 classroom serving students with mild, moderate and severe disabilities. Daniel has also lead a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) elementary school’s pilot team and autism team for three years, started a behavioral consulting service for young children on the autism spectrum and has worked with individuals with disabilities in Sydney Australia while studying a year at the University of New South Wales. Currently, Daniel provides consultation and technical assistance to Indiana public K-12 schools as a coordinator for the PATINS Project on assistive technology, regularly giving presentations and trainings to school personnel both in person and online to help increase student access to and engagement in the general curriculum. In 2006 Daniel was chosen as Purdue University’s Distinguished Young Educator of the year.Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:1. Describe a basic understanding of NIMAS and students with print disabilities with regard to the importance of making instructional materials accessible, portable and engaging.
2. Describe knowledge of how to place text, still images of text, audio, and video of text to speech on iPod/Zune Devices.
3. Locate a list of links to the free software, handouts and other resources to train their colleagues in an effort to scale up accessibility and engagement in their own school districts.
