The fact that many individuals with Parkinson’s disease, ALS and other neurological conditions can never recover enough from their disabilities and disease progression to become functional, competent communicators prompts families and professionals from across all settings to seek alternative forms of communication. In this workshop, we will be discussing and exploring a broad spectrum of alternative forms of communication options for clients with significant communication impairments due to Parkinson’s, ALS and other neurological conditions. Hands-on learning will be a part of this popular workshop.
Learning objectives for participants:
- Participants will be able to describe at least 3 ways the voice and speech intelligibility can be affected by neurological conditions
- Participants will be able to describe at least 3 tools/strategies needed for ALS, PD and stroke patients to effectively communicate
-Participants will be able to list at least 4 different types of alternative communication following a hands-on opportunity with each.
- Participants will be able to list 3 reasons why early intervention is important
