Apps for the iPad, iTouch, & iPhone on Alternative and Augmentative Communication

Description:
There are over 30 different apps that can benefit individuals who experience various communication impairments.  This webinar will review 20 of the most successful apps for children and adults.  In addition, apps related to sign language will also be discussed.

Speaker Biography:
Dr. Therese Willkomm is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy and the Director of New Hampshire’s State Assistive Technology Program with the Institute on Disability at the University of New Hampshire.  She holds a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Technology from the University of Pittsburgh and has over 25 years experience in providing/managing assistive technology services. She is known nationally and internationally as “The McGyver” of Assistive Technology.   Dr. Willkomm has presented in 38 states, five foreign counties, and three U.S. Territories and authored 22 publications including her most recent book titled “Make A Difference Today - Assistive Technology Solutions in Minutes.”

Phyllis Watson is a speech-language pathologist and augmentative communication specialist with more than 25 years of experience working with children, adolescents and adults with a variety of disabilities, in a variety of settings, including early intervention programs, home health, developmental day programs, public schools, hospitals and nursing homes. She has taught courses as an adjunct professor at several universities, including Butler University and Indiana University and guest lectured at several universities including Northwestern, Ball State, Notre Dame and Purdue University. Phyllis has authored a number of therapy support materials. She has presented at local, regional and national conferences on a variety of topics such as communication and language development using augmentative communication devices.
While a consultant for Prentke Romich Company, Phyllis was co-founder of the Minsing choir comprised solely of augmented communicators who were the first in world to sing in 4-part harmony. The choir sang at a national Minspeak conference as well as local conferences throughout the state of IN. The choir was personally invited to sing at the Tenth Annual ADA rally by Indiana Governor O'Bannon's office.
Phyllis joined the ATECH team in 2005 where she provides Augmentative Communication evaluations, consultations and training services.

Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

1.  Participants will be able to identify three apps that use pictures and digitize speech for communication.

2.  Participants will be able to identify three apps that use icons or symbols and synthetic speech.

3.  Participants will be able to identify three apps related to using sign language for communication.
