Tips, Tools, & Technologies: Solutions for Individuals with Autism

Description:
This session provides interactive, innovative and practical technology-based solutions for the student with Autism Spectrum Disorder.  Participants will learn about: 1) Web 2.0 solutions; 2) specific solutions for common challenges; and 3) ways others are integrating technology into the lives of those with ASD.

Speaker Biography:
Dr. Smith has a background in the area of special education and technology, specifically towards the integration of technology across teacher preparation programs. He has authored and presented a number of articles and papers dealing with special education technology and is currently a Project Director on several US Department of Education program initiatives seeking to further the integration of technology components across teacher preparation programs and into the lives of students with disabilities as well as the development of a virtual social skill training experience for students with Autism. Dr. Smith has served as an associate editor for the Journal of Special Education Technology and currently serves as an Associate Editor for Teaching Exceptional Children. He is the proud parent of four young children, one having an intellectual disability.

Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

1.) will walk away with knowledge of technology-based tools specific for the student with ASD.

2.) will gain an understanding of web-based resources that will expand one’s knowledge of effective practices in ASD.

3.) will apply practices of UDL to technology-based solutions for students with ASD.
