What is UDL and why is there a push from the federal education system and now local special education administration to include this type of pedagogy in education? This session will be a perfect opportunity for the distance education learner to gain an overview on the principals of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and the importance of building access for all students in the classroom. From the digital native to English Language Learners -- the UDL framework affords flexibility in the curriculum. Join us for an enlightening peek of practical UDL applications.Speaker Biography:
Kirk Behnke holds a Master's of Education degree from Temple University and a certificate in Assistive Technology Applications from the University College in Dublin, Ireland. He has also gained dual credentialing as an Assistive Technology Practitioner and Supplier from RESNA. Kirk is known for his development and management of the Assistive Technology Applications Certificate Program (ATACP) for California State University, Northridge. Kirk has presented since 1989 at national AT and disability conferences throughout the US and overseas with a high concentration of accessible curriculum design in both live training and online curriculum venues regarding AT, universal design and web 2.0 tools.Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:1. Participants will be able to describe the three basic principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) used in today's classroom.
3. Participants will be able to identify why UDL is so important in today's diverse classroom.
3. Participants will be able to identify three web-based tools to use in the classroom; good examples of UDL pedagogy.
