 Technology to Support Writing by Students with Learning and Academic Disabilities

Description:
The trends and findings from a 25-year descriptive analysis of research studies examining the use of technology to support the compositional writing of students with learning and academic disabilities will be presented.  The use of technologies to support each of the components of the writing process will be described in terms of the writing variables addressed, the research findings and the criteria for evidence-based practice.  Recommendations for educational practice in technology supported writing instruction based on current research evidence will be presented.

Speaker Biography:
Dr. Peterson-Karlan is Professor of Special Education at Illinois State University and previously served as a special education administrator with the Fort Wayne (IN) Community Schools.  He has over 60 publications, 80 presentations to national and international conferences and over 20 research and training grants in assistive technology.  He is currently completing a review and synthesis of more than 25 years of research investigating technology to support writing by students with learning and academic disabilities.  He has recently completed a research study of the effect of use of the SOLO writing software with students with learning disabilities in 4th - 8th grade.

Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

1. Participants will be able to identify the types of technologies that support each component of the writing process.

2. Participants will be able to understand how to use different technologies to support the writing demands at each stage of the writing process.

3. Participants will be able to understand the evidence-base that supports the use of these technologies, and identify the gaps in the research base.
