This set of questions may be used to help guide AAC consumers
in their evaluation of services being provided by AAC professionals. While it is their ethical responsibility to provide optimized communication, you deserve to know that they are pursuing that goal.

The AAC Consumer Checklist

 

Are you committed to providing recommendations for high technology devices that will result in the highest performance communication possible?

 

 

What are the team members’ experiences with and qualifications for providing AAC services?

 

 

Do you have quantitative outcomes data to show me? What is the disuse rate for AAC systems you have recommended?

 

 

Can I talk with other competent communicators who are using AAC systems? Can I talk with family members?

 

 

Do you apply the principles of evidence-based practice? Do you use evidence based on the communication performance of individuals who use AAC?

 

 

Will you discuss the performance differences among the AAC systems that are being considered for me?

 

 

Will you be measuring my communication performance to help in the decision-making process and to monitor my changing needs? What will you measure and how often will you provide me with results of my performance?

 

 

Will you provide services to support my learning to use an AAC system? How much time will be required? Are these services provided in my home when my needs change?
