PREPARING DYNAVOX (DV4 & MT4)
LOGFILE DATA FOR PeRT ANALYSISTwo quick and easy procedures have been written to conveniently convert the Dynavox log file format on the DV4 and MT4 to comply with the LAM format for the generation of an AAC Performance Report using PeRT.
Dynavox added elements to the LAM format as markers to indicate additional information on system use and changes. For example, a “T:” was added to mark the time stamp, “O:” was added to mark the output, and “-“ was added before a letter to indicate spelling. These options are recording choices along with other options that indicate page names, behavior information or button labels. In addition, an encryption option is available. The example below shows a sample file with the time and output options selected on an MT4 with Gateway90:
#Start logfile

PeRT was programmed to accept the LAM format with the time stamp, a mnemonic when included, and the output. Therefore, additional elements in the Dynavox 4 Series need to be removed for PeRT to successfully open and analyze the file.
Follow these simple steps when you want to use your saved files to generate an AAC Performance Report.
Instructions for Converting Dynavox Logfiles into LAM format.
If the Dynavox logfile feature is set up to record only the time (T:) and output (O:), as in the first sample above, then converting to LAM format is a simple matter of opening the file in Word and replacing the "T:", "O:", and "-" with nothing. (The "-" seems to precede logged individual letters when spelling.)
If the Dynavox logfile feature is set up to also record the navigation steps and page information, then a macro can be developed in Word to handle the conversion. Create a Word document to use as a master. Use the following sample for the content and build the macro according to the instructions here.
T:12:05:38 O:"I" G:" GATEWAY 30 MAIN"
T:12:05:38 O:" " G:" GATEWAY 30 MAIN"
T:12:05:41 O:"want" G:" GATEWAY 30 MAIN"
T:12:05:41 O:" " G:" GATEWAY 30 MAIN"
T:12:05:46 O:"drink" G:" GATEWAY 30 MAIN"
T:12:05:46 O:" " G:" GATEWAY 30 MAIN"
T:12:05:48 O:"" G:" GATEWAY 30 MAIN"
T:12:05:55 O:"milk" G:"g30food"1) Place the cursor at the left edge of the first time event.
2) Evoke the macro recorder by clicking on the Tools menu, select Macro, and then Record New Macro.
3) Name the macro. (Consider DVtoLAM.)
4) Store macro in: Select “Just this document”.
5) Click Keyboard
6) Press new shortcut key: Press key F5.
7) Click Assign
8) Click Close (At this point the macro recorder box will be visible and the cursor will include the icon of a cassette tape. Now it is time to enter the keystrokes that will be the macro. As you enter the keystrokes, you will see the actions that are being performed.
9) Press: Delete twice; Right arrow 9 times; Delete twice; CTRL-F (brings up the FIND function); Space; G; ENTER; ESCape; SHIFT + END; ENTER
(This should leave the cursor at the left edge of the next line down.)
10) Click on the little square in the macro recorder box to stop recording.
Now pressing the F5 key will do the same for each following line in the document. (With care it is possible to hold the F5 key and let the autorepeat function of the computer keyboard run down the document. The above example should look like this when done:
12:05:38 "I"
12:05:38 " "
12:05:41 "want"
12:05:41 " "
12:05:46 "drink"
12:05:46 " "
12:05:48 ""
12:05:55 "milk"
When done, use the Save As function to save the document as a text file (.txt) with a file name to reflect that it is now a LAM formatted file.
Open the saved master document for each conversion and replace the master content with the file to be converted. The macro will still be part of the document.
