Universal Language Activity Monitor (U-LAM)

AAC evidence-based practice (EBP) requires the collection and analysis of language samples. Automated language activity monitoring (LAM) or alternative logfile recording is now a standard feature in a growing number of AAC systems. LAM data can be easily analyzed using the Performance Report Tool (PeRT) to produce the AAC Performance Report, a set of seventeen quantitative summary measures of communication performance. This report can be the basis for setting and monitoring therapy goals and objectives and for measuring outcomes.

However, many older and lower level AAC systems do not include the LAM feature. U-LAM is PC software that facilitates the collection of language samples and provides for the inclusion of notations. U-LAM records both the time and content of language events that are available either on a serial port* or in audio form.

U-LAM Screen

U-LAM is easy to use. For serial port recording, simply connect a serial cable from the AAC system to the serial port on the computer. For audio recording, simply plug a microphone or magnetic pickup into the computer and position it near the speaker of the AAC system.

U-LAM can be useful in a therapy session, even though the AAC system may have LAM as a built-in feature, if serial port events are available to monitor. By using U-LAM, a real-time view of communication is available.

Communication is multi-modal. U-LAM can reflect this. U-LAM also offers the ability to record one or more partners in a conversation. Also, notations on non-verbal prompting can be made in the record from the computer keyboard.

Here is a summary of primary control buttons:

Opens an existing U-LAM file.

Saves the current U-LAM file.

Exports the text version LAM format file suitable for PeRT analysis.

Clears the contents of the current session.

/ Starts and stops the recording process.

Provides access to determination of type of recording (serial port and/or audio), serial port settings, and audio recording threshold level.

Audio events are recorded in .wav file format. After recording, audio events can be played back and corresponding transcription text can be entered. A prediction feature may be useful in entering repeated text.

During the recording session, time-stamped notations can be made using the computer keyboard.

U-LAM is the most flexible recording software available to meet your AAC language samplings needs!

A fully functional demonstration version of U-LAM can be obtained in the following ways:
1) Download from the AAC Institute web site. OR
2) Obtain a CD from AAC Institute. (Email sales@aacinstitute.org with your shipping address).
The demonstration program will work for 60 days. A password can be purchased to extend its function beyond that time: $95.
